6.1 The eye: structure and functions of the components Flashcards
Tear duct function
Produces tears- lubricates the eyeball and demonstrates ‘emotion’- central part of the lower eyelid
Conjunctiva function
A thin, lubricating mucous membrane covering the whole whites of the eyes and inside the eyelids- over the front of the eyes
Cornea function
Outer transparent layer that protects the iris and pupil- front- surrounds other structures
Aqueous humour function
A fluid produced by the eyes. This fluid is situated at the front of the eye and provides nutrition to the eye, as well as maintaining the eye in a pressurised state- front of the eye
Pupil function
Central dark points of the iris which dilates in dim light and constricts in bright light- front- the opening in the middle of the iris
Iris function
Coloured ring of muscle which controls the dilation or constriction of the pupil, to enable adequate light to pass into the eye- Front- coloured ring around the pupil
Ciliary muscle function
Muscular structures that surrounds the lens, enabling it to change its shape to bend and focus light- around the lens
Lens function
Bends and focuses light onto the retina to create a sharp image- front- behind pupil
Vitreous humour function
The clear gel that fills the space between the lens and the retina. It helps to absorb shock and maintain the shape of the eyeball. The inside space of the eyeball
Retina function
Structure which contains millions of light sensitive cells, which receive and organise visual info- back of the eye
Macula function
The round central area of the retina, responsible for organising colour vision and fine detail- round area in the retina
Optic nerve function
Bundle of more than a million nerve fibres which carry visual info taken by the eye to the brain- back of the eye and connects to the brain
