6: AOP Sustainability / Resiliency / Food Planning Flashcards
Growth management
Pre-dates smart growth & sustainability planning (in the same family)
Smart Growth
Term used to describe planning for greater sustainability.
Provides economic benefits “for individuals, for neighborhoods, for communities, for developers, for land owners, and for the community as a whole”
10 Principles for Smart Growth
- Create a range of housing opportunities and choices;
- Create walkable neighborhoods;
- Encourage community and stakeholder collaboration;
- Foster distinctive, attractive places with a strong sense of place;
5.Make development decisions predictable, fair, and cost-effective; - Mix land uses;
- Preserve open space, farmland, natural beauty, and critical environmental areas;
- Provide a variety of transportation choices;
- Strengthen and direct development towards existing communities;
- Take advantage of compact building design.
Sustainable Development
Balancing the fulfillment of human needs with the protection of the natural environment to meet the needs of present and future populations.
Includes environmental, social, and economic components.
Triple bottom line
Companies should prepare bottom line for PROFIT, PEOPLE, & PLANET.
Intended to measure the financial, social, and environmental performance of a corporation over a period of time.
1994 John Elkington.
Carry Capacity
Biological concept indicating max population size of a species that could be sustained in perpetuity within the environment, given the availability of food, water, habitat, etc.
Used in city planning to discuss max population and employment that could be carried within a particular community. Relates to amount of land avail for development and infrastructure capacity.
First used in 1845 by US Secretary of State - James Buchanan.
Ian McHarg wrote about this concept in Design with Nature.
Electricity use in buildings
About 75 percent of the electricity used in the country goes towards heating, cooling, and lighting buildings.
Farm to School PRogram
Brings fresh food from local farms to school cafeterias. The school or school district partners with area farmers to purchase food directly, which is then distributed and served at local schools.
Can include meat and seafood in addition to produce.
Food Policy Council (FPC)
Group of individuals that advise local and state government on matters related to food policy.
Food policy councils perform a variety of interrelated tasks, such as facilitating community food assessments, raising awareness of food issues with the public and local governments, developing food policies, advising community planning processes, promoting CSAs, Farm to School, and other programs, and organizing education events.
Agricultural Land Trust
IDs ag lands that should be preserved, and works with farm owners to participate in the trust via a conservation easement.
Conservation Easement:
Agreement between a landowner and a land trust (or conservation group or government agency) regarding the future uses of a private property.
Healthy Corner Store Initiatives
Program provides financial assistance to small corner grocery stores to increase the offering of healthy food sin underserved neighborhoods as well as educating store owners and residents of the need for healthy food options.
Warren County Protests
Had to do with environmental justice.
1982 - Protested the state choosing to dispose of toxic PCB waste near the county’s water supply.
Smart Cities
- Term has been around since the 1990s
- GOAL = achieving cost efficiencies, making infrastructure more resilient, improving urban conditions.
- Sensors are a crucial part of smart city technology.
