systemic infection may result in cardiac and neurological complications such as endocarditis and meningitis

What is a general description of treponema pallidum?
gram negative spirochete
How can you best identify treponema?
dark field microscopy
Why is it difficult to recognize symptoms of syphilis?
often mimic a wide range of other diseases
What can happen is syphilis is left untreated?
long-term complications divided into four stages: primary, secondary, latent, and late
How long can the primary stage of syphilis last?
3-6 weeks
How does the primary stage of syphilis present?
single or multiple sores located at the point of infection

rough red or brown skin rashes
fever

all physical symptoms disappear and you become asymptomatic

30 years or more

10-30 years post infection

paralysis
blindness
diminished muscle coordination/movement
dementia
organ failure
