5.2 Streptococcus Part 2 Flashcards
What is the most serious symptom of rheumatic fever?
inflammation/damage of the heart tissues
What is used to treat rheumatic fever?
penicillin
How does rheumatic fever cause the symptoms?
similarities between the antigens on the heart tissues and the microbe can cause antibodies to destroy both microbe and heart tissue
What is streptococcal septicemia commonly known as?
blood poisoning
What Lancefield group does streptococcal septicemia belong to?
Group B
What is a general description of septicemia?
serious, life-threatening infection of the blood
What can septicemia arise from?
infections in the lungs, abdomen, or urinary tract and may precede or accompany meningitis or endocarditis
What are common symptoms of septicemia?
fever, chills, rapid breathing, and increased heart rate
What are the serious symptoms of septicemia?
shock (fever and hypothermia) and a decrease in blood pressure
How is septicemia treated?
antibiotics
IV fluids
oxygen
What other foreign microbes can cause strepticemia?
E. coli
pseudomonas
klebsiella
What are the three levels of sepsis?
- mild sepsis
- severe sepsis
- septic shock
What are presentations of mild sepsis?
- infection
- temp above 101 or below 96.8
- rapid heart rate
- increased respiratory rate
- increase WBC
What are presentations of severe sepsis?
- infection and mild sepsis symptoms
- organ damage
What are presentations of septic shock?
- blood pressure drops low
- tissue death
- organ failure
