5. Nervous System Flashcards
How does the brain communicate?
It communicates through a series of electrochemical signals
Where must the electrochemical signals pass through?
It must pass through the spine which then travel to the rest of the body
Spinal cord and fluids; highway to the brain
Central Nervous System (CNS)
Sensory nerves that connect to the CNS to relay messages to the brain
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
What cerebral cortex areas all interact to make decisions and send signals?
Brain regions, loves, and cortical
Enables voluntary muscle movement through motor neurons
Somatic Nervous System
What neurons shouldn’t you confuse for each other?
Motor neurons and sensory neurons shouldn’t be confused. (Motor is movement, sensory is senses)
Largely uncontrollable and functions on autopilot beating the heart, digesting, and moving organs
Automatic Nervous System
What are the two functions of the automatic nervous system?
Sympathetic nervous system and the parasympathetic nervous system
How does the brain and all nervous systems operate?
It operates w/ neurons that receive and send electrochemical signals to communicate
What are the four main parts that make up neurons
Soma, axons, dendrites, myelin, synapses
Contains all the DNA, mitochondria, and other essential parts for keeping the neurons alive
Soma
Electrochemical messages are sent through these
Axons
Fat sheaths that protect axons
Myelin
The message travels through the axon to go to what?
Synapses
