29 Homeostasis Flashcards
Define homeostasis
Homeostasis is the ability of an organism to maintain a constant internal environment.
What does the term external environment refer to
The surroundings in which an organism lives
Eg. Humans= Air, Amoeba=Fresh Water
What does the term internal environment refer to
The surroundings of cells in a multicellular organism
Humans=Tissue fluid
State 3 Examples of Homeostasis in humans
Maintaining body temps close to 37°
Keeping blood and tissue fluid pH at 7.4
Preventing build ip of toxic chemicals
Maintaining sufficient oxygen levels
Regulating level of glucose in blood plasma
What organ/organ system controls body temperature
Mainly by skin
What organ/organ system controls Blood Plasma and Tissue Fluid pH
Kidneys
What organ/organ system prevents build up of toxic wastes
Liver and kidneys
What organ/organ system controls Oxygen Concentrations
Respiratory system
What organ/organ system controls Glucose Level
Insulin hormone produced by endocrine system
