anxiety disorders
a category of disorders involving fear and nervousness that is excessive, irrational, and maladaptive (natural part of fight-or-flight)
what separates “anxiety disorders” and normal experiences of anxiety?
the intensity and long duration of the response
generalized anxiety disorder (GAD)
involves frequently elevated levels of anxiety, generally form the normal challenges and stresses of everyday life (constant fear of disaster)
panic disorders
an anxiety disorder marked by occasional episodes of sudden, very intense fear (more intense than GAD)
key feature of panic disorders… panic attacks
brief moments of extreme anxiety that include a rush of physical activity paired with frightening thoughts (constant fear panic attacks will come again)
agoraophobia
an intense fear of having a panic attack in pubic; as a result of this fear, the individual may begin to avoid public setting and increasingly isolate themself
phobia
a severe, irrational fear of a very specific object or situation (divided into 2 categories)
category 1# of phobias) specific phobia
intense fear of a specific object, activity, or orgasm
category 2# of phobias) social phobia
social anxiety disorders: very strong fear of being judged by others or being embarrassed or humiliated in public (limited social activities)
obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCD)
tend to be played by unwanted, inappropriate, and persistent thoughts (obsessions) and engage in repetitive, often quite ritualistic behaviours (compulsion)
major depression
disorder marked by prolonged periods of sadness, feelings of worthlessness, and helplessness. (making the worst, rather than the best)
personal statements of depression:
“It’s all my fault, I messed up”
stable statements of depression:
“Never going to change”
global statements of depression:
“I’m going to mess up everything”
