personality disorder
particularly unusual patterns of behaviour (relative to ones cultural context) that are maladaptive, distressing to oneself or others, and resistant to change
DSM-S-TR
identifies 10 distinct personality disorders which are categorized into 3 clusters based on shred features (cluster a,b,c)
cluster A of (DSM-S-TR)
odd or eccentric behaviour
cluster B of (DSM-S-TR)
dramatic, emotional, or erratic behaviour
cluster C of (DSM-S-TR)
anxious, fearful, inhibited behaviour
[cluster a] schizoid personality disorder (SPD)
individuals are socially detached; they do not desire cause relationships, including being part of a family, and take little pleasure in most activities
(appear “cold”)
[cluster a] schizotypal personality disorder
consists of both a discomfort with close relationships as well as unusual or eccentric thoughts and behaviours
[cluster a] paranoid personality disorder (PPD)
individuals are consistently pre-occupied by the belief that other people are attempting to harm or deceive them; they are often met with anger to these imagined social or physical threats- always suspicious
[cluster b] Borderline personality disorder (BPD)
characterized by intense extremes between positive and negative emotions, and unstable sense of self, impulsivity, and difficult social relationships
[cluster b] Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD)
characterized by an inflated sense of self-importance and an excessive need for attention and admiration, also intense self-doubt and fear of abandonment
Narcissists have 2 sides…
fragile ego and self-enhancement
[cluster b] Histrionic personality disorder (HPD)
excessive attention seeking and dramatic behaviour (use flirting, flattery, and sexuality to get attention they crave)
[cluster b] Antisocial personality disorder (APD)
individuals who have a profound lack of empathy or emotional connection with others, a disregard for others rights and preferences, and a tendency toward imposing their own desires, often violently, onto others regardless of the consequences for other people or often when little animals
What disorder is found in psychopaths
Antisocial personality disorder (APD)
[cluster c] avoidant personality disorder (AvPD)
individual’s avoid social interactions, including those at school or work, because they feel in adequate and are deeply afraid of being rejected (avoid trying new things)
Amygdala
structure believed to be involved w/ avoidant personality disorder
[cluster c] dependent personality disorder (DPD)
excessive need to be taken care of, often requiring frequent assurance from others and help with everyday decision making (afraid of being abandon, hence avoiding disagreeing with others)
[cluster c] Obsessive-Compulsive personality disorder (OCPD)
individuals are perfectionists who are unusually focused on details, organizations, and productivity; those individuals also tend to avoid spending money or throwing not old, worth less objects
[cluster c] dissociative disorders
category of mental disorders characterized by a split between a persons conscious awareness and their feelings, cognitions, memory, and identity
[cluster c] dissociative identity disorder (DID) multiple personality disorders
a person experiences a split in identity such that they feel different aspects of themselves or though they were separated from each other (traumatic events- shifting mind to another place- adapting (DID)
