13.1 the power of the situation: Social Influence on Behavior Flashcards
much of our behaviour depends on…
where we are > who who are
Kurt Lewin believed…
behavior is a function of the person and environment
mimicry
taking on for ourselves the behaviors, emotional displays, and facial expressions of others (unconscious)
social norms
the (usually unwritten) guidelines for how to behave in social contexts- (don’t show up to a funeral in pink pants)
ostracism
being ignored or excluded from social contact (form of social pressure) (need to belong= strong response to ostracism)
social roles
guidelines that apply to specific positions within the group (prof, student, coach)
social loafing
occurs when an individual puts less effort into working on a task with others (ex: coasting, slacking, free riding)
social facilitation
occurs when ones performance is affected by the presence of others- (ex: cyclists ride faster when racing someone, rather than trying to beat the clock)
normative influence
the result of social pressure to adopt a groups perspective in order to be accepted, rather than rejected, by the group (public compliance)
informational infleunce
occurs when people feel the group is giving them useful information (private acceptance)
group think
a decison-making problem in which group members avoid arguments and strive for agreement (can cause lack of communication)
bystander effect (bystander apathy)
is the observation that a individual is less likely to help when they perceive that others are not helping
diffusion of responsibility
the reduced personal responsibility that a person feels when more people are present in a situation
(everyone assumes someone else will help, so nobody actually helps)
altruism
helping others in need without receiving or expecting reward for doing so
(those who have strong bonds with family and friends are more likely to help)
