-won a knighthood and place in Viceroys 1867-77 council after his support in crushing Indian mutiny

Appointed high commissioner of cape 1877

-chosen by conservative Colorado secretary to try and merge British South Africa and the Transvaal

-he deliberately started Zulu war in December 1878 as he saw them as an obstacle

(Withdrawn in 1880 as although war was won was expensive and British were defeated at Isandlwana
