10.2: Describe the five bases of power Flashcards
What are the five bases of power identified by French and Raven?
Reward power, legitimate power, referent power, expert power, and coercive power.
What is reward power?
The ability to provide others with rewards they desire in exchange for accomplishing work.
How can reward power be increased?
By controlling rewards, using social reinforcements (e.g., compliments or feedback), and consistently rewarding others to build recognition.
What is legitimate power?
Power derived from a role or job position, such as a manager or police officer, and typically linked to a higher hierarchical authority or legal mandate.
Why is legitimate power sometimes less effective?
It is tied to compliance behavior rather than engagement or commitment, and it can be difficult to increase if fixed within the hierarchy.
What is referent power?
Power based on charisma, respect, or admiration, often associated with the person rather than their position.
What is expert power?
Power that comes from an individual’s superior knowledge and skills that others rely on, often linked to education or specialized certifications.
How can expert power be increased?
Through education, acquiring scarce knowledge, and becoming a technical expert in a specific field.
What is coercive power?
The ability to force someone to do something against their will, often using threats such as disciplinary action, demotions, or job loss.
What are the downsides of coercive power?
It can lead to dissatisfaction, fear, high turnover, and poor performance, ultimately undermining positive power bases like referent power.
How can coercive power be managed effectively?
Use it sparingly, ensure fairness and consistency, and focus on positive compliance through appropriate responses to violations.
