Manic Episode Definition
Distinct period of abnormally and persistently elevated, expansive, or irritable mood
Abnormally and persistently increased goal-directed activity or energy
Bipolar I Disorder:

*Does not require hospitalization
Cyclothymic Disorder:

Symptoms do NOT meet full criteria for mood episode

Adults: 2 years
Children: 1 year
Symptoms present at least half the time
Cannot be symptom-free for more than 2 months
