Wray- Lymphatic System Flashcards
1
Q
Lymphatic function: (2)
A
- Transport excess fluid from tissue –> blood stream
2. Immune response
2
Q
Lympatic flaps (minivalve) open due to an increase in __________
A
Blood Pressure
3
Q
Flaps: (2 function)
A
- Anchored to connective tissue prevent the lymph vessel from collapsing
- Opens/closes depending on pressure from tissue
4
Q
Two major ducts:
A
- Right lymphatic duct: empties from head, neck and upper limbs (SMALL)
- Thoracic duct: empties from everything else (lower limbs, abdominal region, left upper limbs, thorax, left side of head and neck) (LARGE)
5
Q
Flow:
A
- No pump/no pressure
- Bundled with arteries surrounded by connective tissue which helps lymph flow
6
Q
Cells of lymph
A
- Macrophage
- Lymphatic cells (B and T cells)
- Dendritic cells: capture marked foreign particle and bring it to the nodes. (phagocytic)
7
Q
Lymph Node
A
- Filter Lymph
- Monitor body fluid for pathogens
- Bottleneck effect (exit) allows fluid to remain in node for longer period of time, which allows more time to filter.
8
Q
Thymus: structure and location
A
- Bi-lobed
2. Anterior to aorta; posterior to sternum
9
Q
Thymus: function
A
- Maturation of T-lymphocytes
- Undergoes changes:
- infancy/childhood: highly active
- adulthood: 40% active
- older age (70s): 80%
- Replaced with fat when degrades
10
Q
Spleen: Location
A
Lateral to the stomach
11
Q
Spleen:
A
- Largest lymphatic organ
2. Red (destroys RBCs) and white pulp (destroys WBCs)
12
Q
Tonsils: 3 locations
A
- Pharyngeal tonsil
- Palatine tonsil
- Lingual tonsil
13
Q
Tonsils: function
A
Collect pathogens that enter the mouth and nasal cavity through food or breathing
14
Q
Peyer’s patches: location
A
On the walls of distal portion of small intestine
