Friedman- 2 Chemistry comes alive - Sheet1 Flashcards
Homeostasis
Maintaining internal stability within a system
homeostatic control mechanism (3 components)
- receptor 2. control center 3. effector
homeostatic control mechanism (Receptor)
-Sensor that monitor and respond to changes in the environment, stimulus, set point (blood pressure, glucose, temperature, pH…)
homeostatic control mechanism (control center)
-Analyzes information from receptor create a reponse, Nervous system or enocrine system, Output (electrical impulse & hormone)
homeostatic control mechanism (effector)
-Target for the output that helps reestablish the imbalance
Element
Unigue substance that can not be broken down to simpler substances
Atom
Smallest unit that make up matter
Protons
Positive charge (in nucleus)
Neutrons
Neutral charge (in nucleus)
Electrons
Negative charge (orbits nucleus)
Molecule
Particles composed of two or more atoms hold together with chemical bonds
chemical bonds (3)
- Ionic Bond 2. Covalent Bond 3. Hydrogen bond
Ionic Bonds
Complete gain or loss of electrons, electrons are transferred, formed by cations and anions
