Friedman- 3 Integumentary System - Sheet1 Flashcards
classification of body membranes
epithelial membrane + connective membrane
epithelial membrane
-cutaneous membrane: skin -mucous membrane -serous membrane
connective membrane
synovial membrane (is the soft tissue found between the articular capsule (joint capsule) and the joint cavity of synovial joints.)
Integumentary system
-skin -hair -nails
skin
-sweat glands -oil glands -excretory system -vitamin D synthesis
Integumentary system functions
-protect w/ bacteria, chemical, mechanical, thermal -maintain temperature w/ sweat and flush (blushing)
two layers of skin
epidermis + dermis
epidermis
epithelial cells
dermis
connective tissue: -hair follicle -sensory nerves -oil glands -sweat glands -muscle
subcutaneous tissue
deep to the dermis: fat tissue act as shock absorber & insulation
EPIDERMIS cell types
melanocytes & keratinocytes
melanocytes
-Melanin(protein) -effect of sun -role in protection of keratinocytes
keratinocytes
-keratin(protein) -protective role (needs to be protected from UV)
Skin color
melanin, carotene, & oxygen rich hemoglobin
appendages of skin
- sebaceous gland (oil) 2. sweat glands
sebaceous gland
(oil) -everywhere in body except palms and soles -lubricant
sweat glands
-about 2.5 million all over the body
types of sweat glands
- eccrine: -mostly water -acidic kills bacteria -cooling mechanism
Hair/Hair follicle includes:
hair, hair follicle, hair matrix, & hair shaft
Hair/Hair follicle includes:
prevent heat loss, shield, filter
hair follicle
structure that produces hair
hair matrix
cell devision & hair grows (only part of hair that is alive)
hair shaft
location where hair comes out of the skin
Hair/Hair follicle includes:
medulla (inner stem), cortex (filler meat), cuticle (outside layer-looks like shingles)
goosebumps caused by this muscle
erector pili
nails include
nail body, nail bed, nail matrix
nail function
protective covering
nail body
visible attached portion (nail)
nail bed
epithelial layer underneath the nail body (under nail)
nail matrix
responsible for nail growth (nail inside finger)
skin cancer
- basal cell carcinoma 2. squamous cell carcinoma 3. melanoma
basal cell carcinoma (skin cancer)
least malignant-most common small dome shaped nodules-usually on sun exposed areas-easily removed
squamous cell carcinoma
small red bumps-usually present in head-rapid growth-can metastasize if not removed-goodchance of survival
melanoma
cancer of melanocytes-brown color, irregular shape-highly metastic-randomly starts-early detection is essential for survival
burns
- first degree 2. second degree 3. third degree burn
types of skin damage (burn)
kill cells-denature proteins-loss of fluid (dehydration leading to kidney failure and circulatory shock)
first degree burn
only damage to epidermis-swelling/redness-can heal by itself
second degree burn
epidermis & upper dermis-swelling/redness & blistering-can heal on its own
third degree burn
extensive damage to epidermis & dermis-no initial pain (nerve endings damaged)-need antibiotic, synthetic skin, skin graft
