What Is Learning And Memory? - Edrolo Flashcards
Developmental plasticity
Change of the structure and function of the nervous system that occurs during development. Includes Development and consolidation of neural pathways. Foetus’s, Infants, children and adolescents go through developmental plasticity during growth and development. Developmental plasticity goes through five stages.
Adaptive plasticity
The ability of the brain to change and develop as a result of new experiences. It happens in adults and allows them to develop and recover from serious injury. It includes Sprouting (new neural connections) and Re-routing (finding another connection).
Memory
The process of the encoding, storing and retrieving of information.
Learning
A relatively permanent change in behaviour that occurs due to experience.
Memory trace
The hypothetical physical and chemical changes that occur in the nervous system due to a memory being formed.
Neural plasticity
The ability of the brain to change itself (flexible, pliable) in response to the environment. Neural connections are formed, removed and remade on a continual basis. Neural plasticity is evident in physical changes that take place in the synapse (synaptic plasticity)
