Reinforcement Vs Punishment Flashcards
Negative reinforcement
The removal of an unpleasant stimulus as a consequence of a behaviour that increases the likelihood of the behaviour.
Continuous reinforcement
When reinforcement is given after every correct response. This is essential in the acquisition stage but not effective for maintaining a maximal response rate.
Positive reinforcement
The addition of a pleasant stimulus as a consequence of a behaviour that increases the likelihood of the behaviour.
Partial reinforcement
Only reinforcing after some responses, not all of them. Used after the acquisition stage and responses tend to be stronger and less easily extinguished.
Positive punishment
The addition of an aversive stimulus in order to decrease the likelihood of a behaviour.
Reinforcement
A stimulus that occurs as a consequence of a behaviour that increases the likelihood of the behaviour. This is also the fifth stage of the process of social learning.
Response cost/negative punishment
The removal of a pleasant stimulus as a consequence of a behaviour that decreases the likelihood of the behaviour.
