Neurotransmitters And Neurohormones Flashcards

1
Q

Glutamate

A

Main excitatory neurotransmitter. It is Well know for its role in cognition, learning and memory. Glutamate can bind neurons together through synaptic plasticity involved in long term potentiation

Q

Adrenaline

A

A stress hormone produced within the adrenal gland that activates the fight- flight-freeze response. Adrenaline (epinephrine) can enhance long term memory. It is Important for encoding emotional memories. It Ensures memory strength relates to memory importance.

Q

Neurohormone

A

A chemical messenger that is produced in the cell body of a neuron and is released into the bloodstream, cerebrospinal fluid, or the intercellular spaces of the nervous system.

Q

Compare and contrast neurotransmitters and neurohormones

A

Both are chemical substances. CHEMICAL

Neurotransmitters are Released at the synapse to interact between a pre and post synaptic neuron whereas neurohormones are released by the Neuron and secreted into circulation to have an effect in the body. RELEASED

Neurotransmitters Only function as a neurotransmitter whereas neurohormones Can function as a hormone OR a neurotransmitter. Both Can dampen or enhance a response. FUNCTION
