Factors Invovled In Clasical Conditioning - Edrolo Flashcards
Extinction
A process in which a conditioned response no longer occurs or fades over time following a lack of pairing of an unconditioned stimulus with a conditioned stimulus. Extinction may take longer for complex responses e.g. phobia. For example when the food UCS was no longer provided to the dogs, the degree of salivation CR decreased when the bell CS was presented.
Acquisition
A process in which a conditioned response is developed through the repeated association of an unconditioned stimulus with a conditioned stimulus.
Stimulus discrimination
A phenomenon in which an individual only elicits a conditioned response to a conditioned stimulus and not to other stimuli that are similar to the conditioned stimulus.
Spontaneous recovery
The reappearance of a conditioned response in the presence of a conditioned stimulus following extinction and a rest period. Not as strong as original CR. Can re-appear multiple times but all decrease in strength. Extinguishes faster each time
Stimulus generalisation
The tendency for a stimulus similar to the original conditioned stimulus to produce a response that is similar (but not necessarily identical) to the conditioned response.
