Avoidance strategy
A strategy for coping with stress that involves evading dealing with stress by protecting oneself from psychological distress, for example, by ignoring facts, denial. Avoidance strategies are typically maladaptive, unhealthy for the individual and unhelpful for relieving the source of the stress.
Approach strategy
A strategy for coping with stress that involves behaviours that attempt to decrease stress by alleviating a problem, for example, by applying for jobs or starting homework. Approach strategies are typically dally a,healthy response to stress.
Coping flexibility
The ability of an individual to replace an ineffective coping strategy with a different strategy according to the demands of a stressful situation. Individuals with high coping flexibility are more likely to get positive outcomes when coping with stress. High levels of coping flexibility are linked with low incidence of kmental illness but measurement tools can be inconsistent.
Context specific effectiveness
The tendency for some people to cope more effectively in certain situations than others in that situation.
Meditation
A technique to cause an altered state of consciousness that uses mental exercises to become highly focused on a single thought at the expense of other stimuli.
Physical exercise
An activity that requires exertion in which endorphins are released, providing pain relief, improving mood and relieving stress-related tension. Exercise reduces levels of the body’s stress hormones, such as adrenaline and cortisol, which reduces the experience of stress.
