High level of functionality
A typical characteristic of mental health in which an individual is able to cope with living independently in society whilst developing as a person.
Emotional wellbeing
A typical characteristic of mental health in which an individual has the ability to manage their emotions.
Mentally healthy
A state of emotional and social wellbeing in which individuals can realise their own abilities, cope with the normal stresses of life, work productively, and contribute to their community.
Mental illness
A clinically significant behavioural or psychological syndrome that occurs in an individual. A mental illness can interfere with a person’s thoughts, emotions, perceptions and behaviours. Occurs in excess of 2 months and involves a loss of ability to cope with everyday stressors. Can involve inappropriate thoughts and feelings for a particular culture.
Mental health problem
A problem that causes temporary emotional, cognitive and behavioural difficulties which affect relationships and functioning in everyday life. It is a disturbance in ability to cope with stressors.Less than 2 months in duration. Can limit the ability to work productively.
Social wellbeing
A typical characteristic of mental health in which an individual has positive social relationships indicated by reciprocated connections and feelings of being valued and desired by others.
Resilience
An individual’s ability to adapt to stress and adversity.
