Precipitating risk factor
A risk factor that triggers the onset or exacerbation of mental health problems in an individual. Includes Environmental trigger, Significant life event, Trauma, accident and injury.
Perpetuating risk factor
A risk factor that inhibits recovery from mental health problems. Includes Poor health, Stigma, lack of social support and lack of resources.
Protective factor
A factor thats prevents occurrence or re-occurrence of mental health problems. Includes Good health/sleep/exercise, Hormonal balance/no family incidence and Resilience.
Predisposing risk factor
A risk factor that increases an individual’s vulnerability to developing mental health problems. Includes Genetics, Hormones, Temperament and Poverty.
Risk factor
A factor that may contribute to the likelihood of an individual experiening a mental health problem.
biopsychosocial model
According to this model, mental health is influenced by the interaction of internal (biological and psychological) and external (sociocultural) factors.
