Spinal Reflex - Edrolo Flashcards
Neuron
Specialised nerve cell that receives, processes and/or transmits information.
Sensory Neuron
Neuron that sends information from sensory receptors (e.g. in skin, eyes, nose, tongue, ears) towards the central nervous system.
Motor Neuron
Neuron that sends information away from the central nervous system to muscles and glands.
Interneuron
Create circuits that send information between sensory neurons and motor neurons. Most interneurons are located in the central nervous system.
Spinal Reflex
An automatic, involuntary response to a certain stimulus. This action is triggered by cells in the spinal cord rather than the brain.
Spinal Cord
Bundle of nerve fibres that connects the brain and the peripheral nervous system.
Receptor Site
A protein molecule found on the dendrites of neurons which receive chemical signals from neurotransmitters through a binding process similar to fitting a key into a lock.
Unconscious Response
An involuntary, automatic, unintentional response to sensory stimuli.
Conscious Response
A voluntary, intentional response to sensory stimuli.
