The role of neurotransmitters

A

A neurotransmitter is a chemical substance, typically made up of small molecules. When neurotransmitters are released it finds its complimentary receptors on the post synaptic Neuron. Each neurotransmitter binds with its specific type of receptor. This works as a lock and key process to unlock that receptors potential.

Types of neurotransmitters

A

There are around 50 types of neurotransmitters, most neurons only store one type of neurotransmitters neurotransmitters have two basic effects on the post synaptic Neuron which is to excite the Neuron to fire or inhibit the Neuron from firing.
