What are emotions Flashcards
3 properties of emotion
Phenomenal experience (Feelings/cognition)
Physiological pattern (Bodily reaction, pupil dilation)
Verbal + nonverbal expression (behaviour/body language)
Basic emotional expressions
Fear, anger, disgust, joy, sadness and surprise.
Universal and quite easy to read from faces.
Studies often use the zygomaticus major activation, as this is active in lots of expressions in different manners.
Cross-cultural recognition
basic emotions are relatively distinct, but often mixed to some degree.
There’s subtle differences across subjects, causing cross-cultural recogniction to be to a limited degree
In-group advantage is moderated by cross-cultural exposure
Display and decoding rules
There is a cultural dependence on emotion experience, display rules are norms on displaying emotions.
Eg Japanese, when watching stressful film with someone else, they adapted their expression and hid negative emotions and were more likely to display surpise than Amaricans
Contextual information
Japanese were more likely to be influenced by contextual information and relationships than Americans. They tended to ignore this when making judgement
Also when judging a person with people in the background, Japanese were influenced by emotion of surrounders (sad vs happy)
