Universal property
A
Each syllable must have at least one vowel. A minimal syllable structure is a V (single vowel)
Most common syllable in language is CV (one cons one vow)

- The nucleus:
The obligatory vowel of a syllable - The onset:
The common first consonant - The coda
Consonants that come after the nucleus - The rhyme
Nucleus + Coda form this unit, which is what counts in rhyming

Syllables
A
Basic perceptual units in speech. We can tell them apart from a young age (newborns when differ in vowel) and are universal listeners at 6 mo (even hear diff language syllables). This skill goes away at 12 mo
