Grammar general meaning
Term covering the set of structural rules governing the composition of sentences, phrases and words in any given natural language
Grammar tree
Grammar splits into
- Syntax (construction of phrases)
- Phonology (organisation of sounds)
Phonology splits into
- Phonetics (segments eg vowel)
- Prosody (Suprasegmentals)
Components of language
Grammar (containing all aspects of the tree)
Lexical items;
Words in the lexicon, entities with meaning. These items interface closely w grammar at all levels in the tree.
Discourse
Grammar and lexicon produce speech, which is used in social situations
Discourse refers to the way language is used to convey meaning beyond the individual sentences (structure, organization, coherence)
Pragmatics
The study of how context influences the interpretation and use of language in communication, including social and cultural factors
