Remembering emotions Flashcards
Emotional content
Either pos or neg, if there’s emotional content its remembered better.
In the graph w arousal and valence, the d’ (how well its memorized) is higher when its more positive or negative
Memory experiment
Intentional; Know its a memory task
- Proportion of correctly remembered items dit not differ significantly dependent on the valence (neg or pos) but they’re better than neutral.
Incidental; implicit questions, not aware of memory
- Greater difference between emotional content and neutral stimulus.
Suppressing emotions
Actively/consciously trying to suppress emotion.
- When they had to suppress, the recall performance was worse
Flashbulb memory
Vivid memories that are associated with high emotional value
- Can be positive or negative
- Prone to errors (bits and pieces, filled in by the brain)
Amygdala damage;
- Less flashbulb memories
Retrieving emotional autobiography
fMRI study measured amygdala activation
Participants were asked to recall the same pleasant and unpleasent autobiographical events repeatedly (4x)
Due to the repetition, the response reduces (amygdala not activated) = repetition suppression effect
