Implicit memory Flashcards

1
Q

Subliminal priming

A

Possible but very difficult and little effect

Supraliminal perception is a lot more effective

Key for successful influencing is that the subject doesn’t realize the cues when they’re buying something

Q

Implicit memory

A

Influence of unconscious learned stimuli on memory. Tested w eg
word identification, (is this a word)
Fragment completion
Picture fragment identification
etc

  • An implicit memory task need not refer to the earlier exposure
  • Statistical inference of ‘normal’ response is needed as baseline

Q

Retention

A

Retention of implicit memory remains very stable, whereas explicit goes down.
Implicit is still visible after several days

Q

Amnesia

A

Implicit learning remains largely intact in amnesia patients
- Significant chance of saying played back fruit IF anesthesia was not too deep.

Q

Difference between implicit learning and memory

A

Implicit memory
- does not imply implicit learning (darren brown experiment)
- Has strong influence on behaviour

Implicit learning
- Unconscious
- Affects behaviour without you realising

Implicit memory does not imply implicit learning

Q

Effects of different variables on memory types

A

Implicit memory is sensitive to variables that don’t effect explicit memory and vice versa;

Perceptual format; priming with same modality makes priming possible (eg visual prime, for visual task)

Level of processing; explicit memory depends on this, implicit does not

Implicit is largely intact in amnesia
