Hockett's design features Flashcards
Similarities btw human vs other communication systems
Sensory-motor mode: audio/visual etc
Semanticity: meaningful signs/representations
Arbitrarines; no inherent connection between the form of a linguistic sign and its meaning.
Pragmatic function: serves some purpose
interchangeability: indivu’s can send and receive
Cultural transmission: Language is passed down through generations and learned from the surrounding culture.
Differences in communication systems of humans vs other

Duality of patterning: Language is composed of units (eg words, or morphemes) that can be combined into larger units.
Displacement: Language allows us to talk about things that are not present in the here and now
Productivity/creativity: Creating new words/expressions all the time
!! some of these are found in other species but only humans have them all
