Speech sounds Flashcards
Infant sound discrimination
Discrimination of speech sounds used in a language other than your mothertongue is at 100% at 6-8 months and is near gone at 12
Adult sound discrimination
When the fragment of a syllable is presented io the entire syllable, adults can discriminate cross-language sounds when in a cover story (drop in a bucket) . This means sound perception depends on phonemic/phonetic distinctions and how these sound are categorized.
Linguistic representation
Speech is not just sound, language sounds are processed by brain area pSTG, which captures the phonetic distinction that match adult behaviour with speech sounds
Phonemes
Phonemes are the smallest unit of sound that can change the meaning of a word when switched (eg /p/ and /b/ in pat vs bat.
Phonemic perception
involves the recognition and categorization of speech sounds based on their role in the phoneme system (all possible combo’s/rules used) of a particular language
Phonetic perception
Percepton of physical properties of speech, eg acoustics or articulatory. Eg ‘p’ sounds which can differ depending on factors like aspiration
