Week 8 (Urinary System) Flashcards
What are the main functions of the Kidneys?
excrete nitrogenous waste, excess water and products of drug metabolism
Regulate water volume and chemical composition of body fluids
Secretes erythropoietin- stimulates RBCs from RBM
What is the function of the Hilum?
exit and entry point of blood vessels and nerves (uterers exit)
Define osmosis
movement of water particles from low to high concentration, over a permeable membrane- exert osmotic pull
Define diffusion
movement of particles from a high to low concentration
Why does the Nephron work?
- osmosis
- diffusion
- reabsorption
- secretion
What are the 5 key components?
Glomerulus (Bowman’s Capsule)
Proximal Convoluted Tube
Loop of Henle- descending and ascending
Distal Convoluted Tube
Collecting Duct
What is RAAS?
Renin Angiotensin Aldosterone System:
maintains blood pressure. leads to vasoconstriction- h20 retention in blood
What is the Internal Sphincter?
smooth muscle, involuntary control
What is the External Sphincter?
striated muscle, voluntary control
What is the Urethra?
conveys urine cadually through pelvic cavity (male and female)
