Week 3 (Skeletal System) Flashcards
What is the Axial Skeleton?
forms the central axis, skull/ vertebrae column and rib cage
What is the Appendicular Skeleton?
comprises of fore/ hind limbs and limb girdles- attach to body
What is the Splanchnic Skeleton?
consists of only the os penis- soft tissues (cats and dogs)
What are the types of bones?
long, short, flat and irregular
What are Sesamoid bones?
develop within a tendon, patella= one large bone, protects tendon fabellae= two small bones, proximal to gastrocnemius
What is the Splanchnic bone?
os penis, not attached to rest of skeleton, develops in soft organ
What are the two types of ossification?
intramembranous and endochondral
What is Intramembranous ossification?
process of flat bones of skull are formed, osteoblasts lay down between 2 layers of fibrous connective tissue- NO CARTILAGE
What is the Endochondral ossification?
replacement of a hylaine cartilage model within embryo by bone, long bones of limb develop
List the types of vertebrae in the skeleton.
Cervical, Thoracic, Lumbar and Coccygeal (caudal)
What are intervertebral discs?
composed of tough fibrous connective tissue outer layer and core gelatinous material- linked by ligaments
