Week 6: Altered Ventaliation Flashcards
Yellow/ green thick sputum
Bacterial infection
Purulent sputum with foul odor
Bronchiectasis
Thick tenacious white mucus
Asthma or cystic fibrosis
Blood tinged, hemoptysis
Pulmonary edema or with lung cancer and rupture of BV in lungs due to cancer intrusion of those vessels
Dyspnea
SOB
Orthopnea
Difficulty breathing while lying down
Eupnea
Normal breathing pattern
Expiration little longer than inspiration
Normal depth and tidal volume
Tachypnea
Breathing fast
more shallow
Fast breathing rate is >20 bpm
Hyperventalation
Fast, DEEP
Blow off co2
Bradypnea
Slow rr and deeper than usual
Regular rhythm
Hypoventalation
Abnormally slow and shallow
Retain co2
Apnea
No breathing at all
Hyperpnea
Increased depth of respiration as well as increased rate and rhythm
Same as hyperventalation
Chine- strokes respiration
Neurological disorder messing up respiratory center in the brain
Periodic breathing associated with periods of apnea and shallow and deeper, and deeper then decrease in depth and rate until no breathing again
Ataxic breathing
Periods of apnea with irregular shallow breaths due to neurological insult
Kussmaul’s respirations
Deep regular even respiration like a sighing respiration with an increase in rr
Form of pursed lip breathing
-in those with DKA
Apneusis
Long gasping inspiratory phase with short inadequate expiratory phase
R/t neurological insult
Obstructed breathing
Ineffective expiratory phase with shallow increased respirations
Difficult to get air out
Sputum
Mucus in respiratory tract
