Water Properties Flashcards
Define Polarity
A partially positive region and partially negative region in a molecule.
Define Hydrogen Bonding
Special type of attraction
Which covantenly bonds with
highly electromagnetic atoms
Define adhesion
When water molecules stick to other substances
Define cohesion
Water molecules stick to each other
How is surface tension
1.Less adjacent water molecules so molecular bonds are reinforced
What is high specific heat?
Specific heat is a measurement of heat that needs to be absorbed
or lost for
1g of a substance to
increase its temperature 1 degree Celsius
What is a versatile substance?
A liquid that can dissolve a wide variety of substances.
What is an unusual phase change?
A change in the state of a substance that does not usually happen (Gas to solid) (Solid to gas)
What is electronegativity?
When an atom has a higher tendency to attract electrons
What is a covalent bond?
A covalent bond is a type of chemical bond where two atoms share one or more pairs of electrons.
What is the dipole movement?
The unequal electron sharing caused by the differences in electronegativity.
Hydrogen charge?
Oxygen Charge?
Hydrogen: Partial positive charge
Oxygen: Partial negative charge
Why is water polar?
Why is hydrogen bonds weak?
It breaks it in a fraction of a second but there are many overall.
Why does water have a high specific heat
Water loves to make hydrogen bonds, so it takes a lot of heat to break those bonds
