Calvin Cycle Flashcards
What are the three steps to the Calvin cycle?
Carbon fixation
Reduction
Recycle
What is Carbon Fixation?
When three carbon dioxide attach (each) to one organic molecule that contains 5 CO2 which is Ribulose bisphosphate with an enzyme called Rubisco.
What is the result?
A six carbon molecule that splits into two 3 carbon molecules (3-PGA).
What happens in the stage of reduction?
The two molecules are converted into Glycereldahyde-3-phosphate or G3P.
What does this conversion require?
Energy from ATP and electrons and hydrogen from NADPH.
How much ATP do you need?
6 ATP to donate a phosphate group to become 6 ADP
What happens in the last step Recycle?
Basically 1 G3P is needed for net gain to make glucose and 5 G3P to regenerate W/ATP to create Ribulose Bis phosphate. Also, you need two G3P molecules to make glucose so you need the cycle to go twice to make glucose.
