Leaf Structure Flashcards
Four layers of the Leaf
The waxy layer, Epidermis, Palisade layer and the Spongy layer.
What is the waxy Layer?
It is made of cutin, it is waterproofed, and it prevents H2O exiting the surface of the Leaf.
What is the Epidermis?
The outermost layer of the cells that protects underlying layers.1
What is the Palisade Layer
There is mesophyll, it is where most photosynthesis reactions occur and it is very dense and compact.
What is the Spongy Layer?
It’s loose interconnected passages that allow gas exchange.
What else about the Spongy Layer?
It is made up of mesophyll and is where photosynthesis can occur.
What are guard Cells?
Guard cells regulate gas exchange by using small pores called stomata that regulate when the guard cell opens and closes.
What is the xylem and Phloem?
Xylem-Transports H20 from the roots to the leaves
Phloem- Moves sugar up and down.
What happens when the stomata opens and closes?
When it is open, it becomes turgid, and Hypotonic, where H20 and CO2 enter, O2 exits and transpiration occurs. When it is closed it becomes flaccid and hypertonic (water exits).`
What is Transpiration?
EVAP. of H20 from leaf thru Stomata.
What is Mesophyll?
Packed cells that contain chloroplasts.
