Solutions and Equilibrium Flashcards

With a low solvent comes a….
Hi solute
With a Hi solvent comes a …….
Lo solute
What is an isotonic solution?
It is a SOLUTION where the CONCENTRATION in the surrounding SOLUTION
of the cell membrane
is equal to the concentration of solutes inside the cell.
When a cell is placed in an isotonic solution osmosis…
Doesn’t occur because there is equal concentration gradient.
What happens to a plant cell when it is placed in isotonic solution?
The plant cell becomes flaccid and wilts since there is no turger pressure on the cell wall (which is very rough). It is not IDEAL.
What is flaccid meaning in cells.
Lacking turger pressure.
What happens to an animal cell in an isotonic solution?
It is going to maintain volume since isotonic solution is IDEAL for an Animal Cell.
What is a Hypotonic Solution?
A solution in which the concentration of dissolved substances in the surrounding solutions lower than the concentration of solutes inside the cell.
What happens to an animal cell when placed in a hypotonic solution?
The animal cell will develop cell lyses and burst due to the molecules pushing onto the cell membrane.
What happens to a plant cell when placed in a hypotonic solution?
It will swell up and become TURGID but will not form cell lyses due to rigid cell wall. IDEAL!
What is a Hypertonic Solution
A solution where the CONCENTRATION of dissolved substances in the surrounding solutions is HIGHER than the concentration of solutes inside the cell.
What happens to a plant cell in a hypertonic solution?
The cell will plasmoliyze (loses H20)
What is plasmoliyze meaning in plant cell.
The cell will wilt and DIE! The cell membrane will move outward.
What happens to an animal cell in a hypertonic solution?
The animal cell will crenate and shrink shrivel up and may die.
WHAT IS THIS ALL BASED ON ELI?
OSMOSIS!
