Electron Transport Chain Flashcards
Why do we need NADH+H+ and FADH2?
To bring electrons to the ETC?
What is the main goal of the ETC?
To set up mem. potential to synthesize ATP in ATP synthase
What is membrane potential?
The diff. in proton charge across a mem. that forms a gradient. Allows H+ to diffuse through ATPase.
Why is Oxygen essential for ETC?
It Acts as a final e- acceptor
Allowing the ETC to continue functioning
W/o O2, ETC would back up & halt
ETC steps
NADH donate e- and H+ in complex 1, and H+ and e- move down the ETC. Since integrated proteins reduce and oxidize, they spin, moving e- down the stairs. Therefore, the ETC absorbs the energy made by e- to activiley pump H+ across the membrane. Then FADH2 donates an e- to the second complex. Then NAD+ and FAD+ will return to glycolysis and Krebs cycle. Membrane potential happens,, the final e- acceptor is O. H+ diffuses thru ATP synthase, the ATP synthase spins, and an inorganic phosphate attaches to ADP to turn into ATP.
