Q

describe hydrogen bonding in water

A

oxygen and hydrogen have slight charges due to being polar. These charges are opposite and so they attract to form h20, between these water molecules, hydrogen bonds also form

Q

explain the necessary 2 of the 3 main properties of water and what it causes/leads to

A

1- high specific latent heat
: a lot of energy is require to raise 1kg of a substance by 1 degree Celsius due to this, water have a relatively constant temperature

2- high latent heat of vaporization
: as a result of the high specific heat capacity, to change state from liquid to gas a lot of energy is required

Q

explain the function of the solvent property of water

A
acts as a medium for transport in
a) the blood
b)the digestive system.
 - during break down, water is required to form back
   the monomers by hydrolysis

Q

explain the function of the high specific capacity property of water

A

a lot of energy is require to change the temperature meaning bodily temperature is maintained to allow biochemical reactions in the body and no denaturing of enzymes due to changes in temperature
( remember the body is about 70% water)

Q

explain the function of the high latent heat of vaporization property of water

A

a lot of energy is require to change from liquid to water. This allows for cooling effect by sweating and evaporation. A lot of energy from the skin is used to change state of water allowing cooling effect
