lipids Flashcards
what are triglycerides?
they are a non-polar hydrophobic molecule
describe the structure of fatty acids and glycerol
fatty acids
- long chain of carbon to hydrogen where they may be saturated or unsaturated with carboxylic group at the end
glycerol
- molecule containing 3 carbons with 3 hydroxyl groups
explain the formation of triglycerides
they are made by the reaction between fatty acids containing the carboxylic group and glycerol containing the hydroxyl group in a condensation reaction to produce a product known as triglyceride with ester bonds.
what does non-polar and polar mean?
polar=charged
non-polar= uncharged
what are 3 main functions of triglyceride
1- energy store
2- insulation
3-metabolic source of water
explain the 3 main functions of triglyceride
1- energy store
: triglyceride contains a long a chain of carbon to hydrogen bonds allowing more energy to be released
2- insulation
3- metabolic source of water
: fat gets turned into water and carbon dioxide by oxidation
what does the phospholipid layer contain?
1- phosphate head
2- fatty acid tail
what are the characteristic of contents of phospholipid?
1- phosphate head
- polar and hydrophilic
2- fatty acid tail
- non polar and hydrophobic
what do hydrophobic and hydrophilic mean?
hydrophobic- water hater
hydrophilic-water lover
