characteristics, definitions, cell theory Flashcards
what are the 7 characteristics of living things
1-movement 2-respiration 3- sensitivity 4-growth 5-reproduction 6-excretion 7-nutrition
define the 7 characteristics of living things
movement- organisms shift in position or place
respiration- chemical reaction which may or not use oxygen to produce energy in the body
sensitivity- the ability to detect a stimuli and make appropriate changes
growth- increase in size or the increase in number of cell or cell size{dry mass}
reproduction- making of the same species
excretion- the removal of toxic substances such as urine and urea from metabolic reactions as well as
substances in excess requirement
nutrition- the taking in of material such as ions,
water, oxygen for energy and growth
what is the definition of biology?
dealing with organisms divided into 3 aspects
1- physiology- their function
2- morphology- their structure and shape
3- anatomy- internal morphology
what is the definition of medical biology?
a branch of biology which focuses on medical sciences and its application in biotechnology, biochemistry, biostatics, virology, toxicology
what is the importance of medical biology?
mechanism of life is revealed when we understand their molecular details
what are the steps to doing an experiment?
observation[ask question]-hypothesis-experiment-conclusion
what are 3 cell theory?
1-all living things are composed of one or more cell
2-cells are organisms basic unit of structure and function
3-cells only come from existing cells: Rudolph Virchow
what discovery did Anton Van Leeuwenhoek make?
first person to observe living cells
what discovery Robert Hooke make?
first person to observe dead plants cell
what discovery did Matthias Schleiden make?
all plants are composed of cells
what discovery did Theodor Schwann make?
all animals are composed of cells
what discovery did Rudolph Virchow make?
cells only come from pre-existing cells
