protist-detailed Flashcards
what are protist?
all eukaryotes that are not animals, plants or fungi and are grouped together
what do protist reproduce by?
binary fission[asexual reproduction] and sexual reproduction
what are the characteristics/features of protist
1- can be multicellular or unicellular
2- can be heterotrophic or autotrophic
3- contains nucleus and other membraned bounded organelles
define autotroph and heterotroph
autotroph
- makes its own food generally by photosynthesis
heterotroph
-find found sources from external environments rather than photosynthesis
what is an animal-like protist called, including its features
animal protist are called protozoans and features are 1-they are heterotrophs 2- have mitochondria and digestive vacuole 3- there are 4 types of protozoans a] ciliates b]flagellates c]parasites d]pseudopods
describe the 4 types of protozoans
ciliates
-contain cilia to move through water and waft algae and bacteria into their mouth like structure
flagellates
-contain flagella to propel through water and capture food particles
parasites
- rely on host cell and has a apical complex to wedge through the host cell
pseudopods[ finger like projection from cytoplasm]
-use the pseudopod for
a] locomotion
b]phagocytosis
what are plant like protist called?
algae
describe features/characteristic of plant-like protist
1- contain cell wall
2- contain chloroplast
3- autotrophs
2 example of plant like protist
diatoms and euglena[ can act as heterotroph]
what are the 2 importance of plant like protist
1- act like food source for other organisms
2- make oxygen by photosynthesis
what are fungi like protist called?
mold
describe the characteristics/features of fungi-like protist
1-contains cell wall made of cellulose
2-use spores to reproduce
3-heterotrophs
2 example of mold
1-slime mold
2- water mold
3- downy mold
where are fungi like protist found and why
found in damp environment to absorb nutrients from dead and decaying organic matters
