fungi-detailed Flashcards
what are 5 features of fungi?
1- eukaryotes 2- cell wall made up of chitin 3-heterotrophs 4- use spores to reproduce generally 5- unicellular or multicellular 6- produce sexually or asexually
what disease does fungi cause in human?
1- athletes foot
2- ring worm
3- yeast infection
what are the 3 disadvantages of fungi?
1- causes disease
2- attack plants and destroy crops
3- fungi can be parasite
what are 5 advantages of fungi?
1- decomposer 2- food sources for other organism 3- involved in human food production 4- antibiotics made from fungi 5- have symbiotic relationship with other organism
describe the structure of fungi from top to bottom
spore producing structures found on the top and the hyphae branches into the soil to form the mycelium.
the part outside of the soil is known as the fruiting body
what are spores?
reproductive cell that may be adapted for dispersal or survival
what is a hyphae?
thin strands of cell that make up the fungus cell
what is the mycelium?
hyphae which branches into a larger mass
what is a fruiting body?
reproductive structures which makes spores
what can spores be carried by?
water or air
what does how the fungus look depend on?
the way the hyphae is arranged
describe fungi absorb nutrients
1- fungi grow hyphae into a food source
2- digestive enzymes are secreted from the hyphae into the food source
3- macromolecule broken down into small substances
4- the small substances get absorbed via the pores in the cell wall
what are the 3 methods of asexual reproduction
1- spore
2- fragmentation
3- budding
describe how budding occurs
1- bulge forms on the mother cell via the cytoplasm
2- the nucleus divides mitotically by PMAT
3- bud detaches itself from mother cell forming an identical daughter cell
describe reproduction by spore
cells at the tip of hyphae divide to form spores which grow into fungi that are genetically identical to its parents
