Walking Flashcards
What are the two phases of the gate cycle?
Stance phase (60% of the time) and swing phase (40)
What are the stages of the gait cycle?
Heel strike midstance heel off toe off midswing
What is involved in heel strike to midstance?
Ankle dorsiflexors which control descent of the foot
What is involved between heel strike and heel off?
Hip abductors (prevent pelvic drop) and quadriceps (prevent knee collapse)
What is involved from midstance to toe off?
Ankle plantarflexors to push leg into swing phase
What is involved between toe off and mid swing?
Hip flexors which accelerate the limb in the first half of swing phase
What is involved between midswing and heel strike?
Hip extensors to stop the limb swinging too far
At midstance what is the PE and KE?
Max PE and Min KE which swaps when you step and lower height
What is the loss from the conversion from KE to PE made up by?
Plantarflexors which raise centre of gravity at the end of stance phase
What are the disadvantages of walking on two feet?
Slow
Lower back pain
Patellar dislocation
What are the advantages of walking on two feet?
Can run animals to death
