Peritoneum Flashcards
What layers of peritoneum are there?
A visceral peritoneum which covers the organs and a parietal peritoneum which lines the abdominopelvic cavity
What is the peritoneum? What does it line and why?
A continuous sheet of serous membrane that secretes a serous fluid
It lines the abdominal cavity walls and organs which reduces friction as they move within the abdomen
What lies in between the two layers of peritoneum?
The peritoneal cavity which secretes the serious fluid
What are mesenteries?
peritoneal folds which hold many of the organs in place within the cavity and each fold gives the name of that site
connects organs to each other and the walls
What is the mesentery proper associated with?
The small intestine
What is the transverse mesocolon associated with?
Extending from the transverse colon to the posterior body wall
What is the sigmoid mesocolon associated with?
Connects the large intestine to the pelvic wall
What is the mesoappendix associated with?
The band that connects the appendix to the ileum
What is the lesser omentum associated with?
connects the lesser curvature of the stomach and the proximal end of the duodenum to the liver and the diaphragm
What is the greater omentum associated with?
The food extending from the greater curvature of the stomach to the transverse colon
What is the coronary ligament?
A mesentery that attached the liver to the diaphragm which has a space in the centre (bare area) where no peritoneum exists
What is the falciform ligament?
Attached the liver to the anterior abdominal wall
What are retroperitoneal organs?
Organs that don’t have peritoneal and adhere directly the posterior abdominal wall - they lie behind the peritoneum and include the duodenum, the pancreas, the ascending and descending colon, the rectum, the kidneys, the adrenal glands and the urinary bladder
What is the opposite of retroperitoneal?
Intraperitoneal
