The Lungs Flashcards
Describe the right lung
Three lobes normally but lobes grow depending on restriction
Two tissues:
oblique fissure
horizontal fissure
has an elongated hilum with the bronchi (most superior) veins (most inferior)
gas and liquids go here first as the bronchi is more vertical
How does gas exchange take place?
Only thin walls of the alveoli separate the blood from the gas so the pressure gradient allows passage of gas from areas of high concentration to low
Describe the left lung
Two lobes
One oblique fissure
A cardiac notch which is an indentation caused by the heart
compact hilum that fits under arch of aorta
What is the pleura?
A double layer that protects and lubricates the lung
Describe the visceral layer of the pleura?
Sticks to the surface of the lung and is continuous with the connective tissue of the lung
Describe the parietal layer?
Adheres to the thoracic wall and diaphragm
What is the pleural cavity?
When the double layer of the pleura folds back on itself and leaves potential space between the layers which lubricates motion
