A
Simple columnar epithelium with tubular glands that have large numbers of goblet cells that secrete mucous

Where does the rectum extend from?
A
The sigmoid colon to the anal canal (12cm)

Describe the muscularis of the rectum?
A
A think muscular tunic that has transverse folds called rectal folds

Describe the muscle layers of the anal canal?
A
Has a smooth muscle layer with anal columns that have sinuses that secrete mucous which faeces is pushed against them and a circular muscle layer that thickens to form the anal sphincter
