Fiborous Joints Flashcards
What are the three types of fibrous joint?
- Suture
- Gomphosis
- Syndesmosis
What is a fibrous joint?
Two bones United by a fibrous connective tissue
What is a suture joint and where is one found?
Bones have serrated interlocking edges and the tissue between them is dense collagenous connective tissue found between the seems of the skull
What is the periosteum?
Outer and inner bone layers that cover the joint
What is the sutural ligament?
The periosteum plus the fiborus connective tissue
What is the functional category of the suture fibrous joint?
Synathroses
What is the fontanel?
A membrane that goes over the skull in newborns to allow it to be flexible for the head to grow
What is a gomphosis joint?
Pegs in sockets held there by regular collagenous connective tissue
What is an example of a gomphosis joint?
The teeth (peg) and the alveolar bone (socket) of the mandible and maxillar bones
What are periodontal ligaments?
Attach teeth to their sockets and allow for slight movement during chewing
What is the functional category of a gomphosis joint?
Synarthroses
What is a syndesmosis joint?
Bones that are further apart are joined by a broad band of fibrous tissue called the interosseous membrane
What is an example of a syndesmosis joint?
The joint between the arduous absinthe ulna and the tibia and the fibula
What is the functional category of a syndesmosis joint?
Amphiathrosis
