Cartilaginous Joints Flashcards
Where are these joints usually found?
In areas of high stress e.g the spine
What is a cartilaginous joint?
Two bones United by either hyaline cartilage or fibrocartilage
What are the two types of cartilaginous joints?
- Synchondrosis
2. Symphysis
What is a synchondrosis joint?
Where there is hyaline cartilage between the bones
What is an example of a synchondrosis joint?
The epiphyseal plates on growing bones (replaced by age 25/26 when we stop growing and go on to form synovial joints)
What is the functional category of a synchondrosis joint?
Synarthroses
What is different about the sternocostal synchondrosis?
It is between the first rib and the sternum and is never replaced
What is a symphysis joint?
When fibrocartilage unites two bones, each bone is still covered in hyaline cartilage with fibrocartilage in between the make them slightly moveable
What are some examples of symphysis joints?
- The junction between the manubrium and the sternum
- The symphysis pubis
- The intervertebral discs
What is the functional category of a symphysis joint?
Amphiathrosis
